    Amazon does contextual

I just got an email a few minutes ago - ala TextLinkAds style, Amazon has an open beta program for contextual text link ads.

    Interesting.

A new way to make money or a new way to clutter your site with an affiliate program with piddly penny payments?

Good question. I got the email too. Considering I made a measly $6 off of a $300 sale (roughly) from Amazon the other day, I'm not too inclined to jump on this. The idea is good in theory, but my guess is the clutter will outweigh the benefits.

I had a very high ranking blog about a plant variety with some great amazon products on it and a steady adsense rev. For some reason the amazon stuff never made enough to keep it up on the site. I tried books, products, still nothing. I chalked it up to "must not be the right niche," but still it didnt excite me about amazon's payout amounts and fees.

Also, I have a pro account and I got double charged on my statement every month despite reporting it to them several times. I finally had to delete my payment method on record, but that was a pian to find. Hopefully, they have some serious improvements planned if they hope to capture contextual market share.

Although their name alone may make it much bigger than the technology warrants.

Ok, that's kinda what I figured. Either their tracking system isn't great or their stuff just doesn't convert - either way I never seem to be able to make any money w/ Amazon.

One PPC campaign I ran had a big fat 0% conversion rate. Nice, eh?

    Yup, that's pretty sweet.

I could swear I recall Nintendo saying that one year he made $15K from Amazon. Short of mugging Bezos, I have no idea how you'd make that much - unless Nintendo single-handedly sold $1M worth of Amazon stuff.
