Love the Coast, I wish we could help you. I'm not sure any other forum could either though. Right now, no one really understands it. I've been lucky in that none of my sites have been affected, but I've been following the problems as closely as if my own sites had been affected, and I still don't know what to say. If Matt is to be believed, then you've either got links on your site that they don't like, or you've got too many recip links, or you don't have enough quality backlinks or you've done something else that G sees as being "unworthy". If Matt is not to be believed, then G is just f*cked up. Really, the only thing you can do if you believe Matt is to go through your site with a fine-tooth comb and make sure there's nothing wrong, and you don't have any links G would not like on your site. If you don't have enough quality backlinks, you need to get 'em. If you don't believe Matt, and believe that G is just f*cked up, then there's nothing you can do - only G can fix the problems, if they decide to do so.

Not a good answer, but it's the only one I've got.

the sites i deal with that are undergoing the SAME problem (minus the exact page count) all have NO outbound links and NO reciprocal links... which is why i find it hard to take matt seriously.

on top of that, other (spam) sites i manage. have LOADS and LOADS of 'untrustworthy' inbound links, and are getting crawled and indexed better than ever.

Looks like you had a long ride of tons of free advertising. Hope you saved that cash you made, time to open a adsense account

I don't see how google is a "mess". If it was, people would be using Ask, or some other search engine

LTC, only one important detail you left out. Did you only have LV links pointing to your big site, or did you add LV links outbound from it?

Also, natural backlinks does NOT equal quality backlinks in any way shape or form. You could get 10,000 bloggers who love you and link to you, but if no one links to any of them then it still means squat.

Do a link: command in MSN, and then go through those results, and try to get an idea of how many of those are cached in Google. With the large number of sites dropping from G's index, you may well have lost a large portion of what was powering you before. It happens.

Not, of course, since your "I didn't get my answer fast enough so this must be the wrong place" post, that I expect you ever to read this.

Jimbo, when are you going to learn to truncate quotes to the relevant portion??

Very good points, Michael. LV on the site or to the site? And yes, if other sites are dropping pages like flies, and if those lost pages had links to your site, then suddenly you've lost backlinks. Good point. Very good point.

Looks to me like the link and linkdomain commands at msn are showing tons and tons less than they were showing. Wonder if this is a short term aberation or a change in what msn shows.

Y linkdomain is showing consistent volume of bls as they have been showing.

It's a periodic thing with MSN as far as I can tell, the intermittently dump huge portions of their db then rebuild it. Keeps the index fresh for one, who needs sites that no one cares about anymore?

I see it most clearly on my poetry site... the number of indexed pages will climb to about 7k over a 4-6 month period, then drop to under 200, then climb again. I've lost my mortgage site a couple of times, always returns next crawl.

I think it's on purpose, but it could also be a glitch. It was annoying at first, but you just have to expect it.

Yes, I noticed something, that automated reciprocal links schemes are doomed and are not worth anything other than to drive traffic to sites that can't get indexed in the first place, this includes MFA, scraper pages, affiliate and duplicate content sites like Amazon stores that are getting dropped from the search indexes!

Google is going to take out every linking scheme they can find including all reciprocal link directories, link broker networks of sites made to sell links from and automated reciprocal link networks!
