From what I understand it is creating something of value that others will want to link to. Like an infographic - those seem to be really big on the social bookmarking sites like Digg - or a free e-book, or even a contest. Anything that bloggers will want to share with their readers.

Think of it in terms of fishing. You dangle this tasty bait at the end of your line and the fishies go for it. In this case the bait is one of the things I mentioned above. Your line is your website or blog, and the fishies are the bloggers that will share your content with others.

I am pretty new at this stuff too, but I think I might have got that right.
