Companies send out press releases all the time for various reasons. The most common reason is to gain publicity. It is now a tactic used to not only gain publicity but also to gain links as the story is picked up by different sources. I would not consider that at all BH and I dont think Cutts or G would say it was either. Just because you try to get links to your site does not make it BH in even the strictest sense of the term. Links have legitimate value in that they are the doorways through which people get to your site.

That being said, this was not originally a thread about WH/BH lol so I now return you to your regularly scheduled thread...

I think some sort of certification would be useful as long as it wasn't TOO easy to get. I think rather than being some sort of deal where you attend a weekend class and get the certification just for going, it should be a test of generally accepted questions or exercises etc. The only problem is, its hard to put real life practices into written questions....
The only idea I could think of would be the way you are certified to be a mechanic or electrician or something like that. Some sort of trade class and then a test that actually tests the skills, not just the book knowledge.

well, i agree that getting PR's picked up gives a majority of the link value...true.

but i am not a big fan of cutts, nor a believer in his 'preachings' ... frankly i think he's a wanker (using some british terms) ... but that's a whole other story.

anyway, maybe G doesn't count the links off PRweb for much, but what about MSN/Y! ?? also, why would G (being so picky about which links to display) even show a link from PRweb then?

Good question and one I was thinking about just yesterday. Why does G show the links it does? But that's something for a different thread.

I'm starting to see the value of an SEO certification. And will post about it on 14thC today. I'm editing and fact-checking right now...

This is exactly why I like it so much
There's so many different approaches and the only 'one' that decides if something is right, wrong or neither is the Search Engine itself. It's basically a game without rules...

Medio January I'll be discussing the possibility to get my courses/masterclass certificated (if they are continued). I don't know how this type of thing is done in the US but over here it's not easy to get an official/aknowledged certification. I have the advantage of lecturing at an official university but it would still require a third party report and a certain garanteed level of quality.

I am currently working on a whitepaper of the topics that I'd like to discuss, any input is still greatly appreciated :-)

Jammer, even if you dont get it certified up there, you could do some sort of certification from "Jammer incs" or something like that, which if it took off, would then become just as good as an "official" certification... I mean really, it just takes enough people being certified and enough people seeing it that all other SEO's will need to have it in order to compete...
