appearing on multiple URLs.Canonical tag also tells the search engines which url need to appear in search results.

A canonical link element is an HTML element that helps webmasters prevent duplicate content issues in search engine optimization by specifying the "canonical" or "preferred" version of a web page. It is described in RFC 6596, which went live in April 2012

A canonical tag (aka "rel canonical") is a way of telling search engines that a specific URL represents the master copy of a page. Using the canonical tag prevents problems caused by identical or "duplicate" content appearing on multiple URLs

The rel=canonical element, often called the “canonical link”, is an HTML element that helps webmasters prevent duplicate content issues. It does this by specifying the “canonical URL”, the “preferred” version of a web page – the original source, even. Using it well improves a site's SEO

Canonical URls usually refer to the homepage and is also known as the canonical domain although you want to make sure that you set a preferred domain so that you do not have all of these variables occurring for each one of your web pages.
