Never used both, but I think you'd end up using both anyway just to appease PP users.

Ive only used PP. It is my (mis?)understanding that it is more flexible than G Checkout. Is that what you are saying? Or that PP is just more widely accepted?

PayPal is more widely accepted and more widely used by customers. I'm pretty sure what Anonym was saying was that you'll end up using Paypal as well so you can reach those customers.

In my opinion, PP is a lot more used, due to that fact that they released years before and have such a loyal following of eBay users. PayPal has also partnered with providers and other companies for a lot longer, so they still have a leg up on GC in strategic partnerships etc.

GC is coming along nicely, although slowly. They seem to be focusing on it again, with the addition of new tools and features/functionality.

If you ask me, it's best to use AS MANY different payment options as possible, including PP, GC, Bill Me Later, merchant account, etc. You never know what THE USERS preference will be, so I just offer everything. It can be difficult to lay them all out in a fashion that your users will clearly understand, but several ecommerce usability studies, and Amazon's new product purchase layout seems to mix several payment methods, so it shouldn't be hard to reverse engineer what other have done in that aspect.

So, to answer your question, NO, at this time GC doesn't necessarily stack up to PP as far as users, acceptance and brand, however it it still worth considering as a payment option, simply for the users, but also because GC acceptance allows you to utilize Google's cross promotion channels, such as their merchant sellers page, Product Search, Adwords and other verticals. THese can send a lot of visitors, many of which ARE targeted.

    I'd go with G.

I chose Paypal on instantliquidations.com. It works, does the job, can't complain. It does what it's supposed to do.

I am confident that G does all that just as well.

The thing that G adds that when your adwords add show up it has an extra line saying Google Checkout. I think it could raise conversion percentage.

Haven't tested it, but I don't know of a good reason to not go with G over Paypal.

Paypal does nothing to protect the seller, so no selling point for it their.

If you can afford to use both, then use both.

Neither Stripe nor PayPal requires its customers to have a merchant account. All you need to do is have an active bank account that you can connect to the platform. PayPal will also deposit payments into a debit card, but you have to pay a fee for those transfers.
