    First post encouragement

After signing up, why not bring new members directly to the "Welcome to the Refugee!" forum and encourage them to introduce themselves? Might help with the shy people to get them started.

...and drop them directly on the "New Thread" page, maybe even with a little bit of text "pre-written" (just fill the blanks)???

Can we also provide a big stick that we hit them with so that they post?

A redirect may be a bit too much IMHO. But the welcome email could contain a link and also have a big link encouraging introduction?

Forced posting is a bad idea... period. Some folks are lurkers and some are talkers. A natural easygoing board don't force nuttin!

IMO - lurkers who sign up but don't post AT ALL but DO list their "home page" are forum profile spammers and should be booted after - say - two weeks.

    Howzzat for an idea?

I said encourage, not force. There are tons of shy people out there.

IMO this forum already crosses the line with the 'you've been inactive for X days, please post something or this annoying message won't go away' notification you see when signing after a while.
(not that its ever happened to me )

Michael... I have been "encouraged" many a time to do this or do that... having my arm twisted is a turnoff for me. Just me I guess.
