Pops’ list of 10 things he’s learned running a forum was received very well and seemed to resonate with a lot of our readers. We had several questions and comments on forum promotion so in the spirit of giving the people what they want, a blog post was born. Now, before I go on, I’d like to say that our forum is relatively young (about 15 months old) and we’re definitely not claiming to be the biggest or most successful forum around. Along the same lines, we’re not perfect either. We’ve not done as well as we should have on many of these points. However, that being said, I still think we’ve learned a few things along the way, and if nothing else, you asked for it, right? So here they are… 10 Tips for Promoting Your Forum.
As I said before, our forum is far from perfect, and in fact, you may find that one or two of these tips don’t apply to your forum or aren’t easily implemented. But, I’m also willing to bet there’s at least one or two that you’re not currently using. Give it a shot and see which work best for you.

1Thanks for the post! This is useful info.
I’m investigating forum platforms, and I was wondering if there is some basic set of forum features that you would recommend (For instance, blogs have trackbacks, etc).
For instance, I like Vanilla because it is very simple and looks great, but maybe it’s missing something that you’ve found to be “very important”.

4Thanks for this post - very helpful.
I have my own website and am thinking of getting a forum started as a part of it. Is this feasible or do you reckon that you’d have to have a site that primarily operates as a forum? Are there forum platforms that can run from a managed website such as mine (squarespace)?
I use forums quite a lot, but running one is something else! Good luck

Your post validates some of what I’ve already done. That’s reassuring. :)

10I think the key thing is quality content and not too much monetization. if you are basically creating space for ads nobody will love your service. the key things is to act only in good faith and people will love you. success is in social bookmarketing and that is based on respect.

16HitTail works in forums as well as blogs. Instead of providing suggestions for blog headlines, it can provide ideas for new threads that the moderators can “seed”. Then, the search engines kick in and expand your audience merely by virtue of bringing in more visitors. http://www.hittail.com

19Hi,
Actually what the writer says is correct. Even i started my own forum and didn’t suceeded. But i used to be a continous forum writer. Specially forums related to Travel industry and tourism and Hotels. I have submitted a post on http://roomsnet.com/forums/index.php and post a very urgent comment on it…. earlier it seemed to be a poor site with content but now it has been improved a lot. I think those people use these kinds of valuable ideas to improve thir forum sites. Even today onwards i will re start of promoting my forum in a good manner.
Thanks

21Great info. I just started a brand new forum

Wasn’t sure how to promote it. I really like the idea of physically mingling with others in the real world. We sometimes only target key punchers and forget they are real people.
Thanks for the advice.

29Upon reading your 10 points, I immediately realized there should be 11 points. The 11th is to consider these as your Bible for Success. I consider myself fairly intelligent and if I were asked to come up with 10 points, they would be either the same as yours or not as complete. Excellent Work !!
