There is some complexity to it, which I think makes it difficult to understand what they are doing completely.  

When you say that some of those may not be "universally applied" I think I agree with you completely.

For example, it is quite possible that a search for [hotels] uses different ranking algorithms than a search for [animal rehabilitators].  The rehabilitator's search shows snippets from web pages mixed in with results.  Does that signify something going on that isn't happening with the hotels' search.</description>

Your depth of information is always great.  Of importance, as you have noted before, it is critical to get a sense of which and how many of the patents, or parts of patents have been applied.  That is the next and important step.

Currently, I'm not sure a lot of the aspects of the patents have been applied....or more possibly, universely applied.

Either that...or the complicated nature of the G Maps ranking algos is so complex it is difficult to decipher what exactly seems to have the most impact.

Great work, though.
