I'm a SEO newbie, how to avoid toxic Backlinks?

I have a new website that I want to rank it on google and other search engines. It’s a common understanding that bad links could affect my ranking. How do you put bad links into a site? I assume this is the same thing as a backlink? If so, how do I avoid backlinks being put on my site?

It's not about backlinks put on your site. It's about YOU getting dodgy (cheap) backlinks pointing TO your site.

The remedy: just don't do that

Identify your bad links (you'll find how exactly from this article).
Search for the contact information of the website you have the link on.
Contact the webmaster asking him to remove the link. ...
Disavow the links and upload the file to Google.

Try to search before using any of the link, check for the Spam score of the website before creating any link on it.
