404 is a HTTP response code which means the 'Not Found'. When Server unable to find a requested resource from the client, it returns a HTTP Response code 404. A "soft 404" is when a document describing a 404 error is returned by the server with a 200 OK status code in the HTTP headers.

Soft 404 errors are designed to redirect users and restrict them from viewing a page. It is customized as compared to the typical 404 error which simply takes user to the Error 404 page. Error 404 standardized while soft 404 doesn't have the same set coding as Error 404.

The difference between 404 not found and soft 404 errors is that in the case of 404 not found errors the page is not found and the returned HTTP status code is a 404 or 410 (which correctly corresponds to not found). In the case of a soft 404 error, the page is not found but instead of returning the HTTP status code 404, the page returns the

A 404 error happens when a page is not available and the server sends the correct HTTP status code — a 404 Not Found — to the browser telling the page is nowhere to be found. A soft 404 error happens when the server sends a 200 OK status for the requested page, but Google thinks that the page should return a 404.

The difference between soft 404 and 404 errors is,

404 errors: The HTTP response code 404 stands for "Not Found" An HTTP Response code 404 is returned by the server when it cannot locate a resource that the client has requested.

Soft 404 errors: Soft 404s are pages that appear to be 404s but actually return HTTP status code 200. In other words, even if a "Page Not Found"-style page appears on the website, search engines like Google will still notice it and interpret it as an actual live page.
